01 / GUIDING THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Our flagship program (and former organizational name!), The People’s Science began as a forum for scientists to share “pop abstracts” of their work, created by Dr. Jamil Zaki. The initiative expanded to become an workshop and campus tour, an experimental platform for bridging the gaps between scientists and the public, as well as a framework synthesizing relevant literature on how to do so equitably and effectively. While the forum has been sunsetted for now, the framework continues to play a critical role in our approach to science communication and relationship-building.
Project Goals
01 /
Building Relationships
Science has a history of exclusion and exploitation that needs to be repaired.
02 /
Humanizing Science
Stereotypes about what science is, how it works, and who is a “science person” need to be broken.
03 /
Real World Relevance
Science needs to be situated within real world contexts and other relevant ways of knowing.
Science communication is about relationships & relevance
Science is shaping our everyday lives, yet many of us are left out of the culture and conversations driving it
The aim of The People’s Science is to engineer a culture of practical, lifelong science engagement, as part of a broader culture of knowledge engagement. It recognizes the importance of science- and evidence-driven social change, particularly for socioscientific issues such as GMOs, vaccines, and sustainability.
We design tools, platforms, and frameworks that support institutions of knowledge and knowledge keeprs in sharing their work in ways that are technically, financially, and psychologically accessible. We believe that science is a powerful tool, among many, to move towards a future of wellbeing for people and the planet, but that getting there requires a commitment to openness and repair.
